1911 – July 17 – JSA to Mr. Fred W. Hunt (Cleverdale, NY)

Dear Hunt:
I found my outfit as usual and brought it up to Mr. Barton who is located on the lower end of Forked Island (on Tongue Mountain side).

In a 12” waterproof bag, you will find a lean-to tent approximately 7 X 8, four single blankets, two stretchers and, I believe, a bag of rice. In a piece of water proof cloth, you will find a very cheap cooking outfit consisting of three pails, tin and wooden plates, broiler, frying pan, tin cups, etc. I also left another water proof bag containing a lot of articles, including a carbide lamp, Japanese cooking kit, hand axe, saw, etc., with a man at Pearl Point who keeps boats. It might be well for you to take whatever you need out of this, which he will let you have by showing him this letter.

I have just written to a party in the Adirondacks to ship to you by express to Pearl Point, a conical tent 10 ft. in diameter, 9 feet high with ground cloth, two double blankets, one stretcher and two pieces of cloth 8’ X10’ and 7’ X 8’. I would suggest that you take a trip to Pearl Point and pick out a spot where you wish to camp, look over what things you find there and send me a list of things you require to accommodate your party. I would suggest the lower end of Little Harbor Island and even if your party do not wish to camp, you might enjoy putting up this crude tent which you can use as a place of retreat when sailing up in this direction. None of the outfit is the best and it is all right to leave the tent and cooking outfit when you go away.

You may like your present surroundings better than you thought and should not feel obligated to camp on account of the above, but in any event, I would like you to advise me what your plans are and how many in your party, since it may be advisable for me to send up another tent with two folding cots which I could easily send by express or bring up at the end of the week. I have found it good practice in such cases to get the camp well established before the ladies are brought in.

I am enclosing a map showing the islands and a newspaper clipping regarding the weather, and sincerely hope you and your party will enjoy every minute of your vacation.

Very truly yours,
JSA
