1911 – August 9 – Jack Doyle (Hotel Matabanick, Haileybury, Ontario) to JSA

My Dear App,
Your kind and most welcome letter only received today, owing to having been forwarded improperly.

I have had a very busy year. My sister died in February and I have been on the jump ever since. We were not burned out on Night Hawk Lake but the fire burned 12 miles on the western shore – and blew Charles Auers camp down, I mean the north one, in which you stayed.

Porcupine is looking up nicely and is better than ever. In fact it is now placed beyond doubt as the best camp on this side or in America.

We were burned out in all three camps – in Porcupine, but money will replace it – so I do not care.

Over one half of the people who lost their lives were friends of mine. The fire was so terrible we cannot describe it.

Now this fall if you and Diesman wish to come up, I’ll take you to a friend’s place at Terragami and I’ll get you a Moose. They are plentiful this year, but around the fire districts they will be very hard to get. Would be more than pleased to have you come for a few weeks and will try and do better than last year. Whenever I get time I’ll drop off and see you. Tell Dies I got snapshots, and thanks. Most sincerely,

Jack and Mrs.
