1909 – February 26 – Hull Apperson (Virginia Department Office, South-Eastern Underwriters’ Association, Richmond, Virginia) to JSA

Dear John:
I am handing you enclosed by registered mail W. M. Scott’s note for $500.00 made payable on or before March 5th, 1912, which is three years, also ten shares of stock of the S. C. O. Co. [Staley’s Creek Manganese and Iron Co.?] to be held as security for the payment of the note. No rate of interest is mentioned in the note, but when this is the case the legal rate is assumed which is 6%.

I think the note is all right but Scott wrote me if it was not satisfactory to you he would make it so. I told him to make to time of the note three years, but I see that he has made it three years more or less. He will fix it any way to satisfy you however. Three years is a good time to loan money on and I would take it for that time, just as the note stands. If you find you need the money before the end of that time write me about it and if it is not convenient for Scott to take up the note I may be in a position to life it.

I am very glad indeed you let Scott have this money, it has helped him over a tight place and he appreciates it very much.

We got back from Beaufort yesterday, and while I am not entirely well yet I am very much better. I improved very much down there, eating good fish and oysters right out of the water. I enjoyed my trip and being with Nell, although I did not see as much of her as I would liked to have as she is very busy with her school work. She is looking very well this winter, but is very nervous, it seems to me, which is very unfortunate, for it will tell in time and possibly very serious. She needs a rest, but you cannot get her to take it. I wish I could have her with me but she won’t come.

Duncan is very well and sends love, Martha would too if she was here but George has her in Tazewell. We miss her of course, but she is much better off with Georgia than here.
Let me hear from you as often as you can.
