Roosevelt extended the Blue Line to include Lake George; by 1932\, Apperson and his allies could declare a victory in statewide elections\, winning by a 2:1 margin;1934 – New York Forest Preserve Association; 1944 – Lake George Protective Association; 1940’s and 1950s – prolonged litigation against the International Paper Company’s dam at Ticonderoga; 1956 – Apperson gives Dome Island to the Nature Conservancy\, with friends creating an endowment of $20\,000.

SUMMARY:Protecting Dome Island\, the Centerpiece of Lake George
DESCRIPTION:Dome Island is often described as a sort of centerpiece of Lake George. Remarkably\, no mansions or hotels were ever constructed there\, thanks to the efforts of a young engineer from GE\, in Schenectady\, who took upon himself the challenge of protecting the island from developers and other harms. In 1917\, noticing problems caused by erosion on the north side of the island\, Apperson asked permission of the owner to repair the shores. In 1939\, when he saw trees marked for cutting\, he scrambled to find the money to purchase the island himself\, during the Great Depression. And in 1956\, after exhausting every possible idea\, he finally found an organization interested in taking responsibility for permanent protection\, as a nature preserve\, The Nature Conservancy.

SUMMARY:For the Love of Island Camping
DESCRIPTION:Over one hundred years ago\, when John Apperson made his first trip to Lake George\, he enjoyed camping on the islands in the Narrows\, winter and summer\, and brought many friends along to try out a range of sports\, such as skate sailing and skiing. For a large group of men (and women) who worked for GE\, in Schenectady\, Apperson became a sort of pied piper\, enthusiastically planning excursions away from the crowded city. It wasn’t long before these “happy campers” became aware that their island paradise was threatened by erosion\, and they began organizing work crews to haul rocks and build rock walls. Their efforts attracted the attention of many of the wealthy land-owners\, including Mrs. Stephen (Mary) Loines\, William K. Bixby\, and George Foster Peabody\, who eventually helped Apperson win important political battles.

SUMMARY:Dream of a Lake George Park
DESCRIPTION:Starting back in 1923\, people began talking about establishing a Lake George Park\, to include the central section of Lake George (the islands of the Narrows\, with mountains on both sides\, plus Northwest Bay\, and Paradise Bay)\, to prevent development and preserve the beautiful scenery. John Apperson\, an engineer at GE\, in Schenectady\, wanted to promote this part of the lake for recreation\, and started working hard to persuade wealthy land-owners to sell or donate their land to the state. Many philanthropists helped\, yet some of the wealthy land-owners did not. Apperson encountered opposition from Conservation Commissioners and especially from Robert Moses\, who controlled the purse-strings for state parks.
